Etheridge Ridge, Kosciuszko National Park, NSW, Australia, Title: Carved from the elements – Code: SN91
I’d stayed the night at Seamans hut and got up very early to climb to the top of Etheridge Ridge, which is right next to Mt Kosciuszko, to shoot from there, it was probably just under a kilometer away.
The moonlight casts long icy shadows as I was making my way up icy Etheridge Ridge. Climbing with my backpack of camera equipment weighing close to 14kg and using my tripod as a stabiliser on the icy assent, I remember the wind pick up, pushing an eerie mist past the beam of my head torch. I was in a race against the first rays of dawn light, hoping I would get to the top well before first light. My legs felt as heavy as my breathing, so I took a quick brake because the conditions where slippery and if I did fall over, it would be a slide that might not end so well for me.
I didn’t rest long, probably only 30 seconds, just enough to realign my resolve, I needed to get there, 10 minutes later I was on top of Etheridge Ridge, my balaclava was iced up but I was elated not to have lost any good shooting light. That morning turned into one, of the many great mornings, in my “office”.
