Deception Island, Antarctic Peninsula, Antarctica – Title: Desolation – Code: ANT8075
Deception Island, what a dark colorless place at first glance and feel, but yet an incredibly intriguing and unique environment. Deception Island is an island where its above water land mass is the crater rim of an active volcano. There is a relatively small opening into the middle of the crater, which is a bay, that our ship could sail into. There used to be an old floating whaling refinery in the middle of the bay and they stored the oils from the whales in large storage tanks on the beach. These two crosses in the middle of nowhere are a definite warning of the dangers of the island. There use to be a whole graveyard here of people who had died whilst working on the refinery, but an eruption many years ago saw lava wipeout the graveyard. The people that returned after the eruption only found one cross, so they brought it back to the site and put it into the ground and then made another to remember all the other crosses lost.
